Flame Test Lab

This past week we have been working with flames and and testing there color changing patterns with chemicals. During the flame test we used a piece of wire with the end formed as a loop.To clean the wire, we had to dip the end in the concentrated hydroelectric acid and then we were assigned to put the wire in the flame. Each station had a different chemical and we had to take notes on the different colors that each chemical made.

Chemical Formula              Name of Metal       Color Produced
Nn                                 Mncl                         Green, Orange, Blue                                                              Sr                                  Sr(no32)                    Pink, red
         CN                                CNc/2                       Blue, Green
         CO                                Coci2                        Orange
Mg                                 Mgcl                          Blue, green, orange, red
         Blt                                  Ba(.no3)                    Green, Yellow, Orange

Questions to answer

  1. Not cleaning the metal rod in the Hydroelectric acid, and also Not getting enough of the chemical that is there to test onto the metal wire.
  2. By them not showing any color when you put it into the flame.
  3. You need to look at more then one piece to get the answer.
  4. By the chemicals burning and them letting off the color as they are being burned. One the chemical gets to a certain heat it starts to light a of a color as it burns
  5. strawtheium, lithium,  violet would be last because it has the highest energy.
  6. Because they have to get to a certain temperature before they let of the color.

law of conservation of mass

This past week we have been working with chemicals and finding the mass for each of them. the chemical reaction took place when the liquid started to turn white. when we took our third observation the chemical started of as purple but when we added the chemicals the liquid turned clear. the mass of the reactants was the same as the mass of the products. Yes, the mass has been conserved

Where do elements come from

Elements of the world came from hydorgen gas which is in clouds. The universe is about 95% hydrogen. CLouds of hydrogen gas and dust are comprssed by gravity into stars, which, by the process of nuclear fusion, change a one-proton hydrogen nucleus into a two-proton helium nucleus. Elements came from the nuclear fusion which take place at the cores of stars. The nuclear fusion in the stars also is a bug reason why there are elements here on earth. All Liquids, gases, and solids found on our planet are made from or more of 92 naturally occuring elements. From what they have observed, scientists have determined that these same 92 elements are found throughout our universe. This suggests that a common process leads to their creation. Elements come from a lot of things that go around the world.
