Oceanography Essay

The Ocean is a key part to this world and it plays an important role to human survival. Oceanography has taught me a lot about the ocean and how it works.  I have learned how the Ocean is a major influence on the weather and climate, and how people are inextricably interconnected to the ocean.  Another major topic that we have learned about is how the ocean shapes the features of the earth.  All of these things have taught me the impact that the ocean really has on earth and how we survive with it here.

The Earth is the only planet in our universe that can sustain life.  This is because the Earth is in a spot in the solar system that enables us to be able to comfortably live in our planet.   In the class of Oceanography we have been learning about the fundamentals of physical oceanography and meteorology.  The (waves, tides, currents, etc.) and the (Winds, and climate) help also make this Earth habitable.  The ocean is a major influence on weather and climate.  The ocean has winds and currents that move nutrients and heat to land.  The ocean plays a fundamental role in shaping the climate zones we see on land.  Even areas hundreds of miles away from any coastline are still largely influenced by the global ocean system.  While land areas and the atmosphere absorb some sunlight, the majority of the sun’s radiation is absorbed by the ocean.   Particularly in the tropical waters around the equator, the ocean acts a as massive, heat-retaining solar panel.  Because of all this happening we have different climates and different seasons that occur here on earth.  All this happening is what helps the human race to survive. And without all of this happening who knows what would happen.

The Oceans around the world and the people on Earth are inextricably connected for multiple reasons.  The ocean affects every human life.  It supplies freshwater and oxygen, moderates the climate, influences our weather, and affects human health.  Humans rely on the ocean for food and transportation.  Also the ocean provides us with medicines, and energy resources.  It provides jobs and serves as a highway for global transportation.  So if we didn't have the ocean it would be unlikely for us to survive. So we should take care of it so we are able to survive for years to come.

The ocean shapes the features of the earth.  The ocean affects the place where we live.  Many of the rocks and minerals that form our planet came from the ocean.  Our favorite sandy beaches are made and changed by the effects of ocean waves and currents, and changes in sea level have also shaped the surface of our land.   A key thing that happens from the ocean is erosion.  Coastal erosion is the wearing a way of land and the removal of beach or dune sediments by wave action, tidal currents, wave currents, drainage or high winds.  Another feature of the earth is plate tectonics.  Tectonic plates are huge fragments of Earth’s lithosphere, which consists of the crust fused with the upper mantle.  The Plate builds mountain ranges, but plate-tectonic processes are clearly seen on the ocean floor, where most of the plate boundaries are found.  The ocean covers more than 70 percent of the earth and causes the earth to be shaped the way it is.

All of these things occurring and happening affect the way us humans live.  For years and years features of the Ocean have been changing and they are going to continue unless there aren’t any humans or species to affect it.  Ever since Humans have been on Earth the ocean has affected our climate by creating storms and other things.   Because of all these topics they all affect one another.  I believe that if one of these topics didn’t exist then the ocean would change significantly.  The reason I think this is because if humans and the ocean were not inextricably interconnected than there would be more fish in the water and the ocean would be cleaner than it is.  If the ocean was not connected to the humans than I feel there would be major differences than there are now with us being connected to it.   Also if the ocean wasn’t shaped the way it is I feel as though the weather and the climate would not be the same as it is now.  All the things that happen with the ocean only happen because of the way the ocean is.  So humans should take care of the ocean as much as they can, because they might not know what would happen if we weren’t to have it.
